This year marks the 56th anniversary of Earth Day, a globally recognized day to focus on the environment and which is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Science continues to support how critical the environment is for mental and physical health. Residents have been champions of efforts in Palm Beach County to address environmental issues, such as the restoration and enhancement of natural areas, including the wild and scenic Loxahatchee River, parks, beaches, the Lake Worth Lagoon estuary, and protecting sea turtle and manatee habitats. Palm Beach County is committed to mitigating our climate impact by planning for resilient infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.<br></p></div></div></div></div>

Palm Beach County farmers lead the nation in the production of sugarcane, sweet corn and sweet bell peppers. Palm Beach County farmers lead the state of Florida in the production of rice, lettuce, specialty leafy greens, radishes, Chinese vegetables and celery. Palm Beach County leads all counties east of the Mississippi River for the production of food crops, with a large volume of our vegetable harvest being distributed as fresh produce throughout the eastern seaboard of the United States during cold winter months.<br></p></div></div></div></div>

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1 to 4 in South Florida. Regardless of race, age, gender, or socioeconomic background, drowning and nonfatal drowning incidents can occur. During fiscal year 2025, the Drowning Prevention Coalition provided 413 water safety and drowning prevention activities and education programs, of which 26,365 Palm Beach County residents benefited. In the event of a lapse in supervision, safety features that can limit or delay unintended access to water are critical components in drowning prevention. Through community action and organizational partnerships, promoting and educating about the importance of water safety and swimming lessons, Palm Beach County can achieve the goal of zero preventable drownings.&#160;<br></p></div></div></div></div>

National Work Zone Awareness Week is an initiative aimed at promoting the importance of safety in work zones, not only for road crews, engineers, utility workers and contractors performing their jobs in high-risk environments, often with heavy machinery, traffic and limited visibility, but also for the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. The high-risk conditions in work zones lead to an increased vulnerability to accidents, with 645 fatalities in Palm Beach County work zones in 2025. Increased awareness and adherence to safety protocols can decrease the number of accidents and fatalities. Palm Beach County’s Engineering and Public Works Department and Water Utilities Department prioritize the safety of their staff working along the roadways during the construction, improvement and maintenance of the county’s transportation system and water and wastewater infrastructure, including meter boxes, fire hydrants and pipelines.<br></p></div></div></div></div>

The TogetherForSharon® organization was created in 2020 by Dr. George Ackerman and family in loving memory of Sharon Riff Ackerman, a courageous individual who valiantly battled Parkinson’s disease for 18 years, to preserve her memory, increase awareness of Parkinson’s disease and foster hope for a cure. The family, using their own personal funds, designed a wristband bearing the inscriptions “In memory of Sharon Riff Ackerman,” “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness,” and &quot;TogetherforSharon®&quot; to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease. The Ackerman family and their volunteers honor the memory of Sharon by supporting individuals currently battling Parkinson’s disease and their families, while contributing directly to Parkinson’s foundations, associations and the community.<br></p></div></div></div></div>
